Sri Lanka Visas: How to Apply
All visitors to Sri Lanka must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to arrival or on arrival. We highly recommend applying online before your trip to avoid long queues at the airport.
Cost & Processing
- Standard Tourist ETA typically costs around $50 USD (subject to change based on nationality).
- Processing usually takes 24-48 hours.
The Dual-Monsoon Climate Guide
Because Sri Lanka experiences two distinct monsoon seasons on opposite sides of the island, travelers need to know where to go based on the current month:
November to April
Highlight the South & West Coasts (e.g., Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Bentota) and the Hill Country (Ella, Kandy).
May to October
Highlight the North & East Coasts (e.g., Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Jaffna).
Cultural Etiquette & Local Customs
Sacred Site Dress Code
When visiting Buddhist or Hindu temples, shoulders and knees must be completely covered, and shoes/hats must be removed.
Poya Days
Every full moon day is a public holiday called "Poya". The sale of alcohol and meat is restricted island-wide on these days.
The Right-Hand Rule
It is customary to use the right hand when paying, receiving items, or eating traditional food.
